Djetinja River

Djetinja River

The gorge of the river Djetinja is located in western Serbia, west of Uzice. It is located in a vast mountainous area of western Serbia known as Stari Vlah. The gorge starts near Biostanska Banja and extends to Uzice. The total length of the gorge is about 15 kilometers, the average direction of its extension is west-east, and its steep sides reach a height of up to 400 m above the river level. It is a composite, polygenetic gorge valley that takes on the characteristics and appearance of a canyon. In its northern part, it continues to the Kreman valley, where the river Djetinja is formed by merging the Konjska river, the Bratiska river, the Uzice stream, and the Tomic stream, at 712 m above sea level. The gorge ends directly near the old town of Uzice, where it opens directly into the more spacious valley in which the city of Uzice is located.
This is a smaller spatial unit that has the appearance of a picturesque gorge cut into powerful layers of limestone. The valley sides are very close in places, building a short but very attractive canyon in the central part of the gorge. In the canyon part of the gorge, the bed of the river Djetinja is strongly meandering, forming numerous waterfalls, rapids and whirlpools.
The valley of the river Djetinja is characterized by the alternating arrangement of valleys and gorges, so that starting from the source of the river towards its mouth, Kremanska kotlina, gorge Ljutice, Biostanska kotlina, Staparska gorge, Turicka kotlina (created by meandering river Djetinja), Gradska klisura, Uzicka klisura, Grotska , Krcagovačka kotlina, klisura Vrela, Sevojnicka kotlina, and Uzicka suteska, through which the valley of Djetinje drowns in the Pozega valley.
The longest (about 10 km) and most picturesque part of the gorge is from Bioska to Uzice (Turica field), with the Stapari and Sinjevac straits. The average annual flow of Djetinja is 6.00 m3 / sec, and on the profile of the Great Dam, it is 4.14 m³ / sec.
The gorge of river Djetinja has always been an important road route, forming a corridor through which important traffic connections have always passed. Today, the modern railway Belgrade – Bar passes through the gorge, which is one of the most important railway traffic routes.

TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER

The gorge of the river Djetinja, from Uzice to the dam Vrutci, has been proposed for protection as a natural area of the third category and will receive the status of a landscape of exceptional features. The gorge area is divided into protection regimes of the second and third degree. The protection will cover 853 hectares, of which 98% of the gorge on the territory of the city of Uzice, and two on the territory of the municipality of Cajetina.
The protection regime of the II degree (localities “Susica” and “Suvodol – Krajacica stene”) is 281 26 04 ha, ie 32.97% of the total area of the property, and the protection regime of the III degree is 571 87 39 ha, or 67.03%.
The site “Suvodol – Karajcica stene” is a canyon part of the valley with very close and almost vertical sides. It is carved in powerful limestone deposits and is characterized by the presence of several sharp river meanders. This area is rich in various geomorphological phenomena. Particularly interesting is the appearance of so-called “pots”, limestone depressions in the rocks of the riverbed (known as “Paradise Islands”). High rocky capes are formed on the sides of the canyon, from which vertical cliffs descend to the riverbed.
The locality “Susica” covers the narrower area of the river from the Susica spring to its confluence with the river Djetinje. The left bank of the Susica rises directly above the spring into the steep limestone hill Osoj, while the right bank of the slightly sloping sides, which represent the slopes of the hill Grujina kuća. The steep limestone slopes of Osoj are overgrown with dense vegetation of shrubs, while on the gentle slopes on the left bank there is an oak forest.

Režim zaštite II stepena (lokaliteti „Sušica“ i „Suvodol – Krajačića stene“) iznosi 281 26 04 ha, odnosno 32,97 % od ukupne površine dobra, a režim zaštite III stepena iznosi 571 87 39 ha, odnosno 67,03 %.

For the site under the protection regime of the II (second) degree, prohibitive measures are prescribed: construction of industrial, mining, metallurgical, infrastructural and other facilities and asphalt bases; construction of thermal power facilities, wind generators, ports, commodity and trade centers, service warehouses, warehouses and cold stores; cottages and other family holiday facilities; exploitation of mineral raw materials and riverbed materials; introduction of invasive species; construction of facilities for recycling and incineration of waste, formation of landfills, as well as discharges of wastewater into watercourses and land; plowing of natural pastures, meadows and grasslands, as grassland habitats; grazing livestock, except on existing pastures; logging that is not in line with forest management plans; leaving forest waste generated during sanitary felling; removal of litter, leaves and soil; commercial fishing; camping and lighting fires.
The protection regime of the II degree limits works and activities to: construction of facilities and arrangement of space for the needs of preservation, improvement and presentation of natural and cultural values, reconstruction and maintenance of existing facilities of traffic and other infrastructure; construction of facilities and infrastructure for the needs of recreation, catering and tourism, namely the construction of facilities of smaller capacity in the traditional style that are in line with the needs of rural and ecotourism; partitioning of watercourses and formation of smaller water accumulations on the marginal areas of the II degree of protection; maintenance and reconstruction of the existing traffic, communal and other infrastructure, residential and economic facilities, agricultural and forestry farms; recreational and scientific research fishing, with the proviso that all fishing is prohibited at the “Susica” site; sanitary hunting, protection and improvement of game populations in the hunting ground and measures to improve game habitats; application of chemical agents for the use of artificial fertilizers on arable land, and for chemical plant protection products with the consent of the ministry responsible for nature protection; sanitary felling (removal of dry, semi-dry and broken / fallen trees); forest management so as to ensure the preservation and maintenance of parts of existing natural forests; picking and collecting flora and fauna, according to the Ordinance on the proclamation and protection of strictly protected and protected wild species of plants, animals and fungi; reintroduction of rare and endangered species of wild flora and fauna, as well as taking measures of active protection of fauna (setting up feeding grounds, artificial nests, etc.); introduction of allochthonous wild plant and animal species; use and maintenance of meadows and pastures as grassland habitats, except on areas for the needs of permitted works on construction and reconstruction of buildings and landscaping; controlled access and stay of visitors at certain arranged locations.

The protection regime of III (third) degree determines measures that prohibit: construction of chemical industry facilities, metallurgical and thermal energy facilities; handling of toxic, chemical and other hazardous substances in nature; introduction of invasive allochthonous species, especially into forest ecosystems; formation of landfills, ie disposal of primary and secondary tailings and disposal of municipal, industrial, hazardous and other waste, as well as livestock waste and confiscations and the formation of a livestock cemetery; expansion of existing settlements in the direction of the area for which the II degree of protection regime has been established; fishing (recreational, rehabilitation and scientific research) in certain parts of watercourses that are important for reproduction; discharge of wastewater into watercourses and land; destruction and undertaking of any activities that could endanger strictly protected and protected wild species of plants, animals; grazing livestock, except on existing pastures; disturbing fauna and collecting eggs; plowing of pastures and meadows; damage to cultural monuments and their inappropriate use, ie change of purpose.
Level III protection regime limits works and activities to: construction of other industrial facilities, including smaller facilities for local needs, as well as construction of smaller energy facilities and mini hydropower plants, under the conditions of the Institute, construction of tourist accommodation facilities, infrastructure network and infrastructure facilities in accordance with sustainable using natural values and space capacity, ie improving recreational and excursion tourism; storage of industrial goods and construction materials, as well as cottages on the outskirts of the protected area, next to existing settlements; education of smaller waste management facilities, which are used for collection, storage and treatment of non-hazardous waste in peripheral areas; waste disposal is prohibited within the boundaries of the protected area, in accordance with the law; expansion of construction areas within and around existing settlements, ie construction of individual residential buildings, as well as small commercial buildings; fishing (recreational, rehabilitation and scientific research); hunting for the purpose of maintaining the optimal number and health condition of the populations of hunting species, as well as hunting, ie hunting of game in the hunting ground; sustainable management of populations and habitats of indigenous game species, in accordance with the law; formation of forest monocultures and non-native species on forest land, except for the purpose of preventing erosion and remediation of devastated and infertile areas; maintenance of existing agricultural monocultures; application of chemical agents and artificial fertilizers on arable land, as well as chemical plant protection products, with the consent of the Ministry, in cases where they cannot be removed with biological preparations; collection of fungi, wild plant and animal species in accordance with the Ordinance on the proclamation and protection of strictly protected and protected wild species of plants, animals and fungi; arranging places and installing equipment for temporary disposal and collection of municipal, agricultural and forest waste; activities that may lead to damage or degradation of geoheritage objects and geomorphological phenomena of the gorge; lighting fires in places designated for that purpose; all works and activities that may have a negative impact on the natural and other values of the protected area.
