StaPark Open Air Archaeological Museum

StaPark Open Air Archaeological Museum

Considering that the gorge of the river Djetinja carries elements of natural and cultural space (traces of human activity from several historical periods), the possibility of reviving the cultural and historical heritage in the existing natural environment and linking the content with the gorge of the river Djetinja was noticed.
Inspired by the archeological sites of Velika and Mala Gradina and the heritage mainly from the Neolithic period, the first open-air archeological museum in Western Serbia has sprung up in Staparska Banja. As part of the open-air archeological museum Stapark, visitors have the opportunity to visit the museum exhibition in the museum-exhibition part of the settlement, along with an expert guide service. The tour (life seeing concept) implies telling a story about the Neolithic, living and working conditions in this period, and the characteristics of the business. The tour includes a tour of Neolithic houses with scenes showing the preparation of food in the Neolithic period, the making of pottery, the religious scene in the Neolithic, leather processing, and the making of tools. The tour includes a tour of the semi-dugout and the installed ceramics kilns in the open air and ends in the interpretation center with a souvenir shop and a toilet.
In addition to visiting the museum exhibition accompanied by an expert, it is possible to realize purposefully designed animation programs (life participating concept) by the way of life and work of Neolithic man: production and processing of Neolithic pottery, production, and processing of bones, the concept of leather processing by the way of life of Neolithic man, Neolithic cuisine, archeology for children and making a house out of the mud. It is possible to organize a program activity at the request of the group with prior notice.
The opening of the Archaeological Museum in the open StaPark is planned for the beginning of the summer season in 2022.

The project “New life of Neolithic heritage in recognized natural areas of great importance – NeoLIFE” was approved for implementation in December 2018, and was jointly implemented by the City of Uzice, the City of Tuzla, the High School of Arts in Uzice and the Municipality of Milici.
The works on the establishment of the settlement included the construction of Neolithic dwellings according to a construction project made in accordance with the available archeological material which is kept in the National Museum in Uzice. These are documents on the archeological research of the sites Mala i Velika gradina in Stapari, which were conducted in the middle of the last century. Available data indicate that there were four buildings of this type from the Neolithic and one building from the Late Bronze Age at this site. In addition to the installation of these buildings, the ground floor of the site was arranged in order to adapt the ambience to the modern presentation and to credibly present the living conditions in the Neolithic period.
