The gorge of the Djetinja river, which stretches in a west-east direction, abounds in steep sides that reach a height of up to 400 meters above the river level. The alternating arrangement of gorges and valleys is the most striking element of the relief of the Uzice region, created by tectonic movements, river, lake, and karst erosion.
The most picturesque part of the gorge is a stretch of ten kilometers from the settlement of Turica to Bioska, where the most dominant are the Strapari and Sinjevac straits. As a typical karst area, it is characterized by various geomorphological phenomena, the most interesting of which is the central part of the gorge – the canyon part with locally close and closely gathered sides.
Vertical rocks and cliffs in the gorge of the Djetinja river occupy large areas. Although they provide a characteristic image of inaccessible terrains, the terrain is ideal for practicing extreme sports, especially free climbing.
This way of climbing is, due to its safety, very popular in the world and accessible to all ages, because natural rocks are inexhaustible in their shapes and suitable for all levels of climbers to find places where they can enjoy climbing.
Free climbing on natural rocks is a basic form of climbing that is projected in other disciplines (mountaineering, speleology, sport climbing, etc.) and involves advancing in dry rock only with your hands and feet while the equipment is used to secure in case of a fall. This way of climbing allows climbers to climb at the limit of their abilities, without being afraid of falling because they are secured by certified equipment. An integral part of the safety equipment is arranged directions – previously prepared directions in the rock.
In the gorge of Djetinja river, members of the Sports Climbing Association “Stari grad” from Uzice made directions for weight and speed competition. Fans of sports climbing currently have four sectors at their disposal: Stari Grad, Velika Brana, Suncani vir, and The Blok in the forest.
Area Stari grad is located immediately after passing through tunnel number 11. On the left side is Block B – DP 2016, and further in the extension of Block A – DP 2015. Block A can be reached via Banjica, where it is necessary to cross five meters Via Ferrata by metal wedges.
Block A consists of 20 routes with a total length of 312 meters (individual routes are 9 to 24 meters long), while Block B has prepared 20 routes with a total length of 289 meters (individual routes are 8 to 19 meters long).
The Great Dam sector is located on the promenade just before the Great Dam. 24 directions of individual lengths from 10 to 17 meters have been prepared.
Area Suncani vir is located near tunnel number 16. It consists of 5 marked routes with a total length of 47 meters, with individual routes from 6 to 16 meters long.
The block in the forest is located about 500 meters from the asphalt path through the gorge, towards which it turns right just before tunnel number 20 (the descending point of the Djurica Orlovi hiking trail). In this sector, 14 routes with a total length of 186 meters have been prepared. Individual directions are 9 to 18 meters long.
Sport climbing, although it belongs to the group of extreme sports, is much safer than most classic sports. It is a sport that strengthens character and strengthens the mind. There is no competition with others in it, but you compete with yourself. Sport climbing is suitable for all age groups because it starts and maintains motor skills.
