The General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) proclaimed Mokra Gora on December 2, 2021, at its 24th session in Madrid, together with the best tourist villages in the world within the program “The Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO”. The initiative aims to improve the role of tourism in preserving rural landscapes and landscapes, natural and cultural diversity (local values, activities, and gastronomy).
The area of Mokra Gora is located in the western part of the territory of the city of Uzice between Shargan, Zlatibor, and Tara. The rivers Kamešina, Beli, and Crni Rzav flow through the area. Between the mountain slopes and rivers, all the beauty of a real mountain village stood. The average altitude of this area is 1,000 meters. It has become a popular tourist destination thanks to the Sharganska osmica, a unique narrow gauge railway as well as the Ethno village “Drvengrad”. What surely sets this beauty apart from other popular tourist destinations is that, despite the growing number of tourists, it has not changed anything about its authenticity. There are no modern multi-story buildings or large weekend houses here. The houses are made of wood, covered with shingles, the restaurants have kept the warmth of a real country house. The proclamation of this territory as an area of exceptional features of the first category Šargan – Mokra Gora, is the Nature Park “Mokra Gora”, certainly contributed to that.
The Sharganska osmica is, among the narrow gauge railways, the most attractive tourist-museum railway in Europe. The former narrow gauge railway connected Belgrade with Sarajevo. For fifty years, this railway opened the door to the world of Mokra Gora, and so on until 1974, when it was estimated to be unprofitable. In 1999, the Belgrade Railway started the renovation of the Sharganska osmica for tourist purposes and the entire railway route was revitalized, with authentic station facilities and original wagons. The famous Sharganska osmica has revived as a tourist attraction and today represents one of the most important tourist sights in Serbia. Tourists from the country and the world enjoy the ideal combination of untouched nature and the breath of old times while the popular Cira breaks through the straits and cuts of Shargan and Mokra Gora, along the route where the railway makes an unusual route in the form of number 8. 10 bridges, the height difference of 300 meters from Mokra Gora to Shargan was skillfully overcome. Passing along the route of the famous eight-meter-long 13.5 kilometers, it is almost impossible for a passenger to figure out which direction the train passed and where it has yet to pass.

Emir Kusturica determined this picturesque place as his home, refuge and oasis for all nature lovers by making the film Life is a Miracle. By reviving old houses, transferred from the surrounding places, the architect and creator of the idea of a perfect life out of everyday life, Emir Kusturica created a city on the sunny hill Mecavnik – a whole lavishly and imaginatively rich in cultural features and tourist attractions. Traditionally equipped wooden huts of the mountain style, along with the church dedicated to Saint Sava, a cinema, restaurants, a pastry shop, a library, a swimming pool, a sports hall, sports fields and a ski slope, formed the settlement of Drvengrad. It is exciting to walk the streets of Mecavnik at any time of the year. The streets are named after great artists, athletes and all those who have left or are leaving a trace in the history of mankind with their ideas. Drvengrad hosts a large number of events that bring together prominent artists from around the world, the most famous of which are the International Film and Music Festival Kustendorf, Music Festival Kustendorf Classic, Autumn Theater Festival…
Ski slopes are another pearl of Mokra Gora. At the tenth kilometer towards Tara, there is the ski resort Iver, thanks to which Mokra Gora has become a winter tourist center. There are four trails (red and black) with a total length of 4,400 meters. Hotel Iver is located near the trail, at 1,500 meters above sea level. Within the entire complex, there is also the Ecological Center Carobni breg, the right choice for nature lovers to stay in any season.

A special rarity and feature of this area are numerous sources of clear mountain water, which has gained recognition for its healing properties. The most famous is called White Water. The Bela voda spring is very rare, not only in Serbia, but also in the world, due to its alkalinity. This water can be used for: inflammation of the gastric mucosa, gastritis, increased stomach acid, stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, good for rinsing the nasal mucosa, inflammation of the eyelids – that’s why the people declared eye water.
The church at Beli izvor was renovated – a thank-you note dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the protector of water. Another church that tourists can visit is the church in the hamlet of Krsanje – the church of the Holy Ascension from the end of the 17th century, which was burned three times by the Turks to be made of stone by the people of Mokra Gora in 1892 and still exists today.
