Fishing on the Djetinja River

The exceptional values of the Djetinja river and the richness of the fish stock make it a paradise for recreational and sport fishing, and the most interesting thing is that large specimens of various fish can be caught in the very center of the city.
Lake Vrutci is rich in all kinds of fish, and it attracts fishermen the most because of the capital perch. On the other hand, in Djetinja River, brown trout, grayling, and huchen are inhabiting, which have adapted to the conditions of this aquatic ecosystem. In the Djetinja river, grayling manage to grow up to over 2 kilograms (50 cm), brown trout over 4 kilograms, and huchen even over 15 kilograms. The state record is a caught grayling 53 centimeters three kilometers upstream from the city, which proves that the Djetinja river is a clean river rich in fish and represents a real challenge for fishermen.
The traditional competition in sport fishing in the discipline of fly fishing is organized in Djetinja river within the Cup of the Adriatic-Danube Countries, which takes place once a year. The competition track stretches from the mouth of the Susica River in Djetinja river to the Great Dam, and the base of the competition is the site of Donja Staparska spa.
Fishing upstream on the Djetinja river is allowed seven months a year (from March 1 to October 30), on the principle of “catch and release” and the landscapes are suitable for fishing with fly gear throughout the course while spinning rod fishing is possible only in the lower part of the river current. Fishing is strictly controlled and poaching is severely punished.

The canyon part of Djetinja river represents a great potential for the development of salmonid fish species, namely: Salmo trutta (stream trout), Barbus peloponnesius (stream barbell), Alburnoides bipunctatus (shallow, greenfinch), Barbatula barbatula (mustache, tern, midge), Phoxinus phoxinus  (pijor, bojanac, gagica, zelenak), Leuciscus cephalus (maple), Gobio sp. (krkuša), Hucho hucho (huchen), Thymallus thymallus (grayling), while occasional restocking includes carp, scorpionfish, California trout, bream, and stream trout. The Susica river is of great importance as a natural trout hatchery and is the only natural breeding ground for river trout. The existence of artificial barriers (dam and Lake Vrutci) negatively affects the migration and spawning of indigenous species but facilitates the control of ichthyofauna and control of restocking needs.

By the Law on Protection and Sustainable Use of the Fish Fund of the Republic of Serbia, three fishing districts have been established on the watercourse of the Djetinja river:
On the stretch from Gradska plaza upstream to the locality of Suncani vir, recreational fishing is allowed according to the “catch and release” system throughout the year. The regime applies to all salmonids of the fish species (brown trout, huchen, and grayling) while chub and perch are carried by applicable regulations. Fishing is prohibited during the spawning season of salmonid species.
The stretch from the Sunčani vir site to Donja Staparska Banja belongs to the Blinker (spinning rod fishing) district. Fishing without a return hook is allowed. Fishing with fly gear is also allowed in the area. Fishing is prohibited from October 1 to March 1 each year.
From the location of Donja Staparska Banja upstream up to 500 m before the Vrutci dam, fly fishing is allowed. In this area, it is allowed to fish with one hook without a return hook. Fishing is prohibited from October 1 to March 1 each year.

Recreational fishing can be obtained based on a permit for recreational fishing. The permit is issued as an annual, daily, or multi-day (up to seven days). The annual permit for recreational fishing is valid in all fishing waters of the Republic of Serbia, except in the fishing area in the fishing waters the protected area. The person buys an annual permit for recreational fishing in the place of residence or stay, except for the permit for fishing in a protected area. The user issues a daily and multi-day permit for recreational fishing for the fishing waters that have been given to him for use. A recreational angler can use a maximum of three rods with two hooks on each rod. Persons under the age of 14 may engage in recreational fishing without a permit, with one rod in the presence of a person holding a permit for recreational fishing.
