In Uzice, the word beach does not only mean a place that citizens use for summer refreshment. The beach is the pride of the city, a unique public space where in Uzice you can still feel the charm of the village that has delighted passers-by for centuries with a unique combination of urban and natural.
The mountain river was calmed by a great constitution, and the people of Užice got an oasis of rest and recreation. Everything is here in one place – beautiful beach, spacious promenade, water polo pool, water raft, landscaped playground, children’s pool, beach volleyball court, exercise equipment, basketball and tennis courts, mini pitch court, and all near the Old Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Old Town.
The city beach is the starting point of the promenade route which connects the city center with the route of the old railway and the gorge of the Djetinja river. For these needs, the old railway bridge was reconstructed and an elevator platform was set up for families with children, people with disabilities, and cyclists.
The location for the construction of the beach with a dam on Djetinja river was approved by the People’s Committee of Tito’s Uzice in April 1959 at the request of the Society of Friends of Children. The beach was built according to the idea of engineer Miladin Pecinar, the works were led by Vojimir Vojo Bojovic. It was officially opened on August 7, 1960, in the presence of a large number of citizens, led by the mayor Rajko Jecmenica. The area of the lake is 25,000 square meters. The beach was built in the most beautiful part of Uzice, under the city fortress. The former beaches of Lekin vir, Kod debele vrbe, Kod cetvrte stene, Plavi Jadran, Pod bukom, Zuljin vir, Jaz, Dragova and Fikarova plaza have been transformed into a new city beach.
An unofficial federal competition in diving from the old railway bridge on the beach has been organized in Uzice since 1993, in August. The patron of this competition is the City Assembly, and the organizer is the Public Company “Veliki Park” Uzice. For the first four years, the competition was held on the Preobrazenje holiday, August 19, and since 1997, due to warmer water, the competition has been moved to the end of July or the beginning of August. The height of the bridge from the water surface is 12 meters, and the depth of the river is about 4 meters. There is usually no wind, so this place is suitable for holding such a competition. Conditions allow only so-called flying jumps (in which the jumper does not dive deep), because the water depth is insufficient for other types of jumps. The competition lasts for two days. On the first day, in the pre-competition, the jumpers fight for a place among the top 12. On the second, final day, they jump in three series. After the first series, the jury determines the six best, after the second series – three, and then they, in the third jump, compete for the title of winner, ie for the placement from first to third place.
